One Hand, One Heart: One Hundred Years of Leonard Bernstein
March 4, 2018
Leonard Bernstein was one of the most genius and successful musicians in American history. His name is synonymous with culture and class. From conducting to teaching to composing his was a life most musical. With West Side Story (with its innovative rhythms and ground-breaking use of intervals), On the Town, and Candide he changed the definition of what Broadway musicals could be. And while Bernstein’s songs live in the space where opera and musical theatre meet they have also been covered by some of pop music’s biggest stars.
To celebrate the maestro’s 100th birthday we pay tribute to the musical masterpieces he created while honoring the scope and reach of his genius. A cast of New York’s top vocalists backed by a three-piece band present such classic songs as “Tonight,” “America,” “Somewhere,” “New York, New York,” “Some Other Time,” “I Can Cook, Too,” “Glitter and Be Gay” and “Make Our Garden Grow.” They will be joined by the twenty-voice “Broadway by the Year” chorus on several selections to give the evening a sense of the grandeur Bernstein’s music demands.
