Monet Sabel & Matthew Stoke
June 4, 2018
Until now, Monet Sabel (Sweeney Todd Off-Broadway) and Matthew Stoke (Williamstown Theatre Festival, Cherry Lane) had only sung together after a couple bottles of wine, at which point one of them would inevitably turn on The Last Five Years recording. They met at NYU on day one of acting class, and spent the next four years becoming best friends. After enduring a BFA’s worth of traumatic vocal performance classes, and late night sessions frantically memorizing Chekhov, the cliché of falling in love with your best friend became a reality.
Monet returns to Feinstein’s/54 Below after most recently appearing in The Muppets concert series, and has developed shows at the club including Zack Zadek’s The Crazy Ones, Hit List from “Smash,” and the Smile reunion concert. She has enjoyed originating songs from new musical theatre writers in concerts, demos, and workshops. Matthew was last seen at the club in Chasing Summer by Chavez and Papadimos. In venues across the city he has debuted new musicals by writing teams such as Gretchen Cryer/Nancy Ford, Jonathan Fadner/John Blaylock, and Edison Hong/Tim Parker.
Taking the stage for the first time together, this night will feature some of Monet and Matthew’s most-loved tunes. With songs by contemporary musical theatre writers, bands such as Lake Street Dive, and legends like Stephen Sondheim, it is sure to be a great introduction to this up-and-coming duo.
This show is part of Feinstein’s/54 Below’s Summer 2018 concert series: Duo Shows at 54! From partners to siblings to co-stars and beyond, these evenings will celebrate the special collaboration of two artists brought together. Join us as some of today’s greatest performers team up with each other for this unique and exciting series.
