Nathan Tysen is a Tony® and Grammy-nominated writer whose recent work includes lyrics for THE GREAT GATSBY, PARADISE SQUARE, and the cult favorite digital musical A KILLER PARTY (all with music by Jason Howland). Additional Broadway and West End credits include the Olivier-nominated AMÉLIE (music and co-lyrics by Dan Messé) and TUCK EVERLASTING (music by Chris Miller). Other work with Miller includes lyrics for THE BURNT PART BOYS, FUGITIVE SONGS, and DREAMLAND (OR A MUSICAL RIFF ON SHAKESPEARE’S MIDSUMMER SET DURING THE DECLASSIFICATION OF AREA 51)*.

An accomplished writer and performer of children’s music, he and Miller have penned tunes for “SESAME STREET” (2012 Daytime Emmy Award) “ELMO’S WORLD,” “THE ELECTRIC COMPANY,” as well as written two circuses for Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey, and an adaptation of Chris Van Allsburg’s picture book THE MYSTERIES OF HARRIS BURDICK. Current projects include REVIVAL (based on Willa Cather’s short story Eric Hermannson’s Soul), musical adaptations of Claudia Shear’s BLOWN SIDEWAYS THROUGH LIFE and the film LOVE IS STRANGE, as well as the theatrical choral piece THE UNTITLED JOE HILL PROJECT. Nathan writes and performs with the band Joe’s Pet Project, with whom he composed the rock theatre piece STILLWATER. He was also a contributing lyricist to the musical revue STARS OF DAVID, and has written material for the Broadway Inspirational Voices and BCEA’s Red Bucket Follies.

In 2014 Nathan won both the Edward Kleban prize for most promising lyricist and the Fred Ebb award for excellence in musical theatre songwriting. His shows have been nominated for Olivier, Tony®, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Drama League, and Lucille Lortel awards. He is the recipient of awards and grants from Jonathan Larson, Richard Rodgers, Daryl Roth, Kitty Carlisle Hart, ASCAP, and the NEA. Nathan has worked for over a decade writing and directing for the Lovewell Institute for the Creative Arts, helping to create over a dozen new musicals with young adults. He has also taught lyric writing, songwriting, and auditioning masterclasses around the world. Nathan is a proud member of ASCAP and the Dramatist Guild.
